A laser projector uses a solid-state light source instead of a mercury lamp. That means no bulb to replace, no warm-up wait and no lamp disposal, in exchange for a higher price up front.

For a room that runs six hours a day, that trade is usually worth making. For a room used twice a week, it usually isn't.

Here's how the two compare, what the lifespan numbers actually mean and which rooms should get a projector at all.

What is a laser projector, and how does it work?

A laser projector generates its image using a laser or laser-LED light source rather than a mercury arc lamp. The light source is solid-state, so there's no consumable part that burns out and needs swapping. Three practical differences follow from that. It turns on and off almost instantly instead of warming up and cooling down. It contains no mercury, so spent lamp disposal stops being part of the lifecycle. And its brightness declines gradually across tens of thousands of hours rather than dropping off within a few thousand.

When is a projector the right choice, and when isn't it?

Standard classroom, up to about 30 students. An interactive flat panel is usually the better answer. No throw distance to calculate, no ambient light problem, no shadow when a teacher stands at the board, and the surface is touch-enabled.
Lecture hall, auditorium, chapel, gym, large multipurpose room. A projector wins, because image size past roughly 100 inches is where flat panels stop being practical or affordable.

Brea, CA – (Oct. 2, 2024) – ViewSonic Corp., a leading global provider of visual and edtech solutions, launches the M1X portable projector. A compact and lightweight projector, the M1X features an LED light source, and a unique patented 3-in-1 smart stand that allows it to beam 360-degree projection angles. At less than two pounds, the ViewSonic^® M1X portable projector can be used from indoors to outdoors and offers a stunning viewing experience.

A portable LED projector with integrated Harmon Kardon speakers, the ViewSonic M1X features multiple connectivity options, so users can enjoy their entertainment or work options with Chromecase, Roku or AppleTV, or be connected through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The built-in battery can power the projector for up to four hours* or can be used with a power bank for longer entertainment options. With native WVGA (854x480) resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio, the M1X offers 150 ANSI lumens of brightness, as well as easy set-up functionality with horizontal/vertical keystone and automative four-corner adjustment.
