Every time I taught Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man in my AP 11th-grade English classes, I discovered new dimensions of the novel’s devastating beauty and profound complexity. My students, however, often struggled with its dense themes—identity, race, and societal invisibility. These topics sparked rich discussions, but it was difficult to know who was truly engaged and who was quietly struggling. Some students dominated conversations while others stayed silent, leaving me guessing who grasped the symbolism and who needed more support. Many educators can relate.

Back then, I didn’t have a tool like ClassSwift. I relied on exit tickets, short formative quizzes, and classroom discussions to gauge understanding. I might as well have been carving lessons into stone walls with burnt sticks and ochre.
