What Is an Interactive Flat Panel (IFP)?

An interactive flat panel (IFP) is a large touchscreen display that replaces the whiteboard and the projector with one device. Teachers write on it, run apps on it, pull up web content and connect student devices to it.

Think of a tablet the size of a whiteboard, running its own operating system, mounted at the front of the room.

Here's what an IFP actually does, how the long-term cost compares to a projector and what to check before your district standardizes on one.

What does an interactive flat panel replace?

One IFP typically takes the place of four things: the dry-erase whiteboard, the projector and its bulb, the document camera and the separate speakers most classrooms added to make the projector usable.

That consolidation is the practical case. Fewer devices at the front of the room means fewer things to mount, power, service and replace on different schedules.

How is an IFP different from a projector or a smart TV?

An IFP is touch-enabled, runs its own operating system and needs no bulb. A projector needs a bulb, a dark room and a separate surface. A smart TV displays content but can't be written on and isn't built for eight hours a day of classroom use.

What do interactive flat panels change in the classroom?

Three things change, and only one of them is about the screen.

More students can work at the board at once. A 64-point multi-touch panel means several students can write simultaneously instead of one at a time with one marker. The lesson format changes because the hardware stops being a bottleneck.

Lessons stop depending on what's printed. With web access and apps on the device, a teacher can pull in a video, a simulation or a live document mid-lesson and adapt to the pace of the room.

The front of the room stops needing a technician. No bulb warm-up, no cable hunt, no projector alignment. That's minutes back in every period and one fewer reason to file a ticket.

Do interactive flat panels cost less than projectors over time?

Usually yes, though the savings come from consumables and software rather than from the purchase price.

The purchase price of an IFP is higher than a projector or a whiteboard. What disappears afterward is the recurring spend: no bulbs, no filters, no replacement markers, no whiteboard resurfacing and no separate speaker system.

Two costs matter more than most buyers expect:

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an IFP and an interactive whiteboard?

An interactive whiteboard is a touch-sensitive surface that still needs a projector to show the image. An interactive flat panel is the display itself, so there’s no projector, no bulb and no shadow when someone stands at the board.

How long does an interactive flat panel last?

ViewBoard IFP41 panels are rated for 50,000 hours of backlight life. In practice, most districts replace panels when software support ends rather than when the display fails, so ask about both the rated hours and the software support timeline.

Are interactive flat panels E-Rate eligible?

No. E-Rate funds connectivity and internal connections, so it can cover the network cabling, switches and access points that serve the classroom, but the panel itself is an end-user device and is not on the eligible services list. Districts typically fund panels through Title I, Title IV-A, state and local funds or bond measures.

Do teachers need training to use an IFP?

A university in Colombia wanted to modernize its classrooms, replacing traditional whiteboards with more dynamic, interactive, and collaborative tools, while also strengthening its institutional communication channels with a digital signage system.

En este contexto de crecimiento constante, la UAI se propuso renovar y equipar múltiples aulas, laboratorios de informática y salas de trabajo colaborativo en su sede de Buenos Aires con una solución audiovisual integral: monitores para puestos de trabajo individuales, proyección para aulas de mayor formato y pantallas interactivas (IFP) para dinámicas de enseñanza más participativas. With the rollout of ViewSonic^® ViewBoard^® interactive displays (IFP8635 / IFP7535), the institution modernized its classrooms, replacing traditional whiteboards with digital boards that deliver a more dynamic, interactive, and collaborative learning experience. In total, eight interactive displays were installed in classrooms at the main campus and two additional displays in the library, extending access to these tools beyond the classroom. Un monitor docking USB-C sustituye tres compras por una sola: el monitor, la estación docking y el cajón de adaptadores que nadie encuentra nunca. Un solo cable transporta video, datos, energía y red.

Para un equipo de TI, eso significa un SKU que comprar en lugar de tres, un cable que estandarizar y una categoría menos de hardware que genera tickets.

¿Qué es un monitor docking USB-C?

¿Por qué importa el puerto Ethernet para TI?

Porque una conexión cableada a través del monitor resuelve problemas que crea el Wi-Fi, y la mayoría de los artículos sobre monitores USB-C no lo mencionan.

Un puerto RJ45 en el monitor te da una conexión cableada en el momento en que el usuario conecta el único cable. Eso significa que la creación de imágenes de equipo y las actualizaciones corren por Ethernet en lugar de competir por el ancho de banda inalámbrico, las políticas de red basadas en MAC siguen funcionando, y las sesiones VPN dejan de caerse en las zonas del edificio donde los puntos de acceso están saturados.

Para cualquier organización con políticas de solo cable para ciertos roles, esta es la función que hace posible el docking con un solo cable.

¿Qué especificaciones deberías exigir al estandarizar?

Exige estas cinco antes de poner un monitor USB-C en tu lista de estándares.

Suministro de energía de 90W o más. 65W es suficiente para un laptop delgado y liviano. No mantendrá cargado bajo carga a un laptop empresarial de 15 pulgadas, y un laptop que se descarga mientras está conectado genera exactamente el ticket que intentabas eliminar.
Un puerto Ethernet RJ45 integrado. Un adaptador USB a Ethernet es una cosa más que se puede perder, y anula el propósito de un solo cable.
Suficientes puertos USB para el escritorio real. Cuenta los periféricos que se usan hoy y agrega uno más.
Salida DisplayPort. Necesaria si alguien en el equipo requiere dos pantallas desde un solo cable.
Un conjunto de funciones consistente entre tamaños. Estandarizar solo es más simple si el monitor de 24 y el de 27 pulgadas se comportan igual.

Pide también la lista de compatibilidad de laptops. Una instalación de un solo cable depende de que el laptop soporte DisplayPort Alt Mode sobre USB-C, y algunos equipos antiguos de la flota no lo hacen.

¿El encadenamiento (daisy-chaining) funciona con todos los laptops?

No, y vale la pena confirmarlo antes de prometerle dos pantallas a un departamento.

Encadenar un segundo monitor desde el primero usa DisplayPort MST, que depende del soporte gráfico del laptop y no del monitor. Los equipos Windows con DisplayPort Alt Mode generalmente lo manejan bien. macOS no soporta MST para escritorio extendido, así que los usuarios de Mac obtienen una imagen duplicada en lugar de dos pantallas independientes.

Si tu flota es mixta, diseña los escritorios de doble pantalla según lo que las Mac puedan hacer, o conecta la segunda pantalla directamente.

¿Cómo se ve la implementación de un monitor USB-C?

Empieza donde hay más rotación, y luego estandariza hacia afuera.

Estandariza en una sola especificación de cable en todas las oficinas y salas. La calidad de cable mixta es la causa más común de "ayer funcionaba".
Exige suministro de energía de 90W o más para que un solo modelo cubra toda la flota de laptops en lugar de dos.
Empieza con salas de reuniones y zonas de escritorio compartido, donde el equipo rota diariamente y el ahorro de tiempo se nota en una semana.
Haz la prueba piloto con los usuarios de estaciones móviles, no con los usuarios más simples. Si funciona con el laptop más exigente del equipo, funciona en todos lados.
Planifica qué pasará con los docks existentes. Redistribúyelos a los escritorios que aún no hacen el cambio, y deja de comprar más.

Un monitor docking USB-C elimina una categoría de hardware de tu lista de estándares. Eso es una cosa menos que comprar, dar soporte, garantizar y explicar.

DESAFÍO

Con el objetivo de fortalecer la comunicación con la ciudadanía y modernizar sus espacios de atención, un Ministerio de Paraguay necesitaba una herramienta que permitiera difundir información institucional, campañas de concientización, avisos importantes y contenido de interés público de forma dinámica, reduciendo la dependencia de la cartelería impresa y facilitando la actualización inmediata de los contenidos.

DESAFÍO

En este contexto de crecimiento constante, la UAI se propuso renovar y equipar múltiples aulas, laboratorios de informática y salas de trabajo colaborativo en su sede de Buenos Aires con una solución audiovisual integral: monitores para puestos de trabajo individuales, proyección para aulas de mayor formato y pantallas interactivas (IFP) para dinámicas de enseñanza más participativas. 24 proyectores: 17 PA503W (3,800 lúmenes) para aulas de uso frecuente y 7 LS500WH láser (3,000 lúmenes / 2,000 ANSI) para espacios donde se buscaba reducir el mantenimiento a largo plazo.
66 monitores: 64 VA240-H IPS de 24” para los laboratorios de informática y 2 VX2718- PC-MHD curvos gamer de 27” para puestos de trabajo especializados.

Gracias a una infraestructura confiable y a una administración centralizada de contenidos, la institución fortaleció su comunicación institucional y mejoró la experiencia de atención a la ciudadanía, consolidando un modelo de comunicación más eficiente, innovador y orientado al servicio.

La Universidad Abierta Interamericana (UAI) es una institución universitaria privada argentina, fundada en 1995 y parte de la red de instituciones educativas VANEDUC, dedicada a la docencia y la investigación desde 1942. Con presencia en más de una decena de sedes en la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, la provincia de Buenos Aires y Rosario, la UAI resume su propuesta bajo el lema “El futuro sos vos”, apostando a la innovación en sus espacios de enseñanza y trabajo colaborativo.

DESAFÍO

En este contexto de crecimiento constante, la UAI se propuso renovar y equipar múltiples aulas, laboratorios de informática y salas de trabajo colaborativo en su sede de Buenos Aires con una solución audiovisual integral: monitores para puestos de trabajo individuales, proyección para aulas de mayor formato y pantallas interactivas (IFP) para dinámicas de enseñanza más participativas. El reto no era solo tecnológico: la universidad buscaba un solo proveedor capaz de cubrir las tres necesidades a la vez, con soporte técnico y garantía local, para simplificar la gestión de un parque de equipos que crece junto con la institución.

SOLUCIÓN

24 proyectores: 17 PA503W (3,800 lúmenes) para aulas de uso frecuente y 7 LS500WH láser (3,000 lúmenes / 2,000 ANSI) para espacios donde se buscaba reducir el mantenimiento a largo plazo.
66 monitores: 64 VA240-H IPS de 24” para los laboratorios de informática y 2 VX2718- PC-MHD curvos gamer de 27” para puestos de trabajo especializados.
3 pantallas interactivas ViewSonic IFP6533 para dinámicas de enseñanza más participativas. 4 Identidad de marca ViewSonic incorporada en la ambientación física de los espacios.

Para responder a este desafío, y de la mano de Matic —canal integrador que ejecutó toda la implementación del proyecto—, se desplegó un mix de productos ViewSonic distribuido en tres categorías —monitores, proyección y pantallas interactivas— cubriendo distintos espacios del campus: aulas de cómputo, salas de clase tradicionales con pizarra e IFP, y salas de trabajo colaborativo con identidad de marca ViewSonic en la ambientación.

En proyección, se instalaron 17 proyectores ViewSonic PA503W, de 3,800 lúmenes, para las aulas de uso más frecuente, y 7 proyectores ViewSonic LS500WH, con tecnología láser WXGA de 3,000 lúmenes (2,000 ANSI), para los espacios donde la universidad buscaba reducir el mantenimiento y el cambio de lámparas a largo plazo. En conjunto, suman 24 equipos de proyección.

En monitores, se equiparon los laboratorios de informática con 64 monitores ViewSonic VA240-H de 24” con panel IPS, pensados para el uso prolongado frente a pantalla, y los puestos de trabajo más especializados con 2 monitores curvos gamer ViewSonic VX2718-PC-MHD de 27”, para un total de 66 unidades.

Para las dinámicas de enseñanza más participativas, se incorporaron 3 pantallas interactivas ViewSonic IFP6533, que permiten a docentes y alumnos interactuar directamente sobre el contenido proyectado en tiempo real.

En total, se instalaron 93 equipos ViewSonic en la sede de la UAI.

Más allá del equipamiento, uno de los componentes distintivos de este proyecto fue llevar la identidad de marca ViewSonic directamente a la ambientación física de las salas de trabajo colaborativo. A través de señalética y muralismo, el logo y los colores de ViewSonic conviven con el mobiliario y la arquitectura del espacio, convirtiendo estas salas en un punto de encuentro visualmente reconocible dentro del campus.

Esta decisión responde a un objetivo que va más allá de equipar: busca posicionar a ViewSonic como un aliado tecnológico visible y presente en la vida diaria de la universidad, no solo como proveedor de hardware. Cada vez que un alumno, docente o visitante utiliza estas salas, la marca está presente en el entorno, reforzando la alianza institucional de forma orgánica y cotidiana, sin necesidad de un mensaje publicitario explícito.

Contar con 93 equipos ViewSonic instalados bajo una única marca simplifica el soporte técnico y la gestión de garantías para la UAI. La combinación de monitores, proyectores e IFP cubre desde el puesto de trabajo individual hasta el aula de formato amplio, dando a la universidad una solución audiovisual integral y consistente en todos sus espacios.

El resultado más visible del proyecto, sin embargo, va más allá de la tecnología instalada: las salas de trabajo colaborativo con identidad de marca ViewSonic se convirtieron en un espacio propio dentro del campus, donde la marca acompaña la experiencia diaria de alumnos y docentes. Esta presencia constante y no publicitaria refuerza la alianza institucional entre ViewSonic y la UAI de una manera que el equipamiento por sí solo no lograría.

Una entidad de gobierno del sector educativo en Ecuador convocó su principal licitación anual, orientada a equipar con proyectores a las aulas de 9 zonas educativas con varios centenares de colegios públicos en la capital del país, como parte de un proyecto que llevaba más de un año en desarrollo. Las especificaciones técnicas debían garantizar suficiente luminosidad y una resolución adecuada para actividades de lectura, gráficos y contenido en PDF dentro del aula, además de exigir tiempos de entrega e inversión ajustados a un proceso de compra pública de gran escala.

Durante los seis meses previos al concurso, el equipo de ViewSonic trabajó de cerca con la institución realizando demostraciones y dejando equipos en préstamo para pruebas, confirmando que 4,000 lúmenes era el nivel de brillo adecuado para el aula y que la resolución WXGA (1280 × 800) ofrecía la combinación ideal de amplitud de imagen y nitidez para lectura, gráficos y contenido en PDF. Este trabajo previo ayudó a la institución a definir las especificaciones técnicas del concurso, incluyendo el requisito de medir la luminosidad en lúmenes ANSI —el estándar de la industria— en lugar de la métrica comercial de “lúmenes blancos y de color” que utilizan otros fabricantes, y que el modelo ViewSonic PA503W cumplía a la perfección.

Cuando se publicó el concurso por 2,760 proyectores, ViewSonic calificó al 100% en la evaluación técnica. El segundo factor decisivo fue el tiempo de entrega: la institución solicitaba 90 días para la totalidad del pedido, un plazo que representa un reto para la mayoría de fabricantes. Gracias a que ya contaba con inventario en tránsito hacia su bodega en Panamá, ViewSonic pudo cubrir los 2,760 equipos desde ese centro de distribución y reducir el tiempo de entrega efectivo a 60 días, obteniendo una mejor puntuación frente a la competencia. El tercer factor fue el precio: con el respaldo del equipo comercial de ViewSonic y un rebate adicional de Texas Instruments, se logró ofrecer un precio más competitivo que resultó decisivo para ganar la licitación.

RESULTADOS

Este proyecto se consolidó como uno de los negocios más grandes que ViewSonic ha ganado en el sector público educativo de la región, fortaleciendo su posicionamiento como marca líder en el mercado de proyección para instituciones gubernamentales. El desempeño del proyecto también fue reconocido por Texas Instruments, que solicitó documentarlo como caso de éxito propio.

Con base en estos resultados, la institución lanzó una segunda fase de compra por 730 proyectores adicionales, para completar un total de 3,500 unidades bajo el mismo estándar técnico.

Como parte del proceso de evaluación, ViewSonic realizó una presentación comercial y una demostración práctica ante el comité responsable de la decisión, integrado por el director, el encargado de adquisiciones, el equipo de TI y profesores líderes de ciclo. Tras comparar tres marcas líderes del mercado, la institución seleccionó las pantallas interactivas ViewSonic IFP7551 gracias a su mayor robustez, rendimiento y al ecosistema de software myViewBoard.

Entre los atributos más valorados destacaron sus 16 GB de memoria RAM, la autenticación mediante NFC para que los docentes iniciaran sesión de forma rápida y segura, y las herramientas colaborativas de pizarra digital, presentación e integración con servicios en la nube.

La implementación se completó durante las vacaciones de invierno (entre junio y julio) para evitar interrupciones en el calendario académico.

Como parte del proyecto, las pantallas reemplazaron las pizarras acrílicas tradicionales, convirtiéndose en el principal recurso de enseñanza de cada sala. Paralelamente, el equipo de TI enroló a todos los docentes con tarjetas NFC, permitiéndoles acceder en segundos a sus cuentas de Google Drive y al material pedagógico almacenado en la nube.

Para asegurar una adopción exitosa, ViewSonic realizó tres jornadas de capacitación dirigidas a los 67 docentes de la institución, entregándoles las herramientas necesarias para aprovechar al máximo las funcionalidades de las pantallas interactivas y del ecosistema myViewBoard.

Una de las principales redes de laboratorios clínicos y de diagnóstico del país, con presencia en más de 240 clínicas en México, requería estandarizar el equipamiento de sus áreas de atención al paciente y consultorios especializados para ofrecer una experiencia de trabajo más eficiente y uniforme.

SOLUCIÓN

Se implementaron 120 monitores ViewSonic VX2476-SMHD para estaciones de entrega de resultados de laboratorio y consultorios donde se realizan estudios como electrocardiogramas. DESAFÍO

Una de las principales cadenas farmacéuticas de México se encontraba en un proceso de expansión y modernización de su infraestructura tecnológica, con la necesidad de estandarizar el equipamiento tanto en oficinas corporativas como en sus sucursales para mejorar la operación, la atención al cliente y la experiencia en los puntos de venta.

SOLUCIÓN

Para atender este requerimiento se implementó una solución integral con distintas líneas de monitores ViewSonic, seleccionadas de acuerdo con la necesidad de cada área del negocio. Se suministraron 268 monitores VG2441 para equipar estaciones de trabajo en las oficinas corporativas, 232 monitores VA1903H destinados a un sistema de consulta y verificación de precios dentro de las farmacias, y 1,959 monitores táctiles TD2465, utilizados para equipar los puntos de venta (POS) en las sucursales.

La implementación del TD2465 representa el segundo año consecutivo en el que este modelo es seleccionado para el despliegue nacional, consolidándose como la plataforma estándar para las terminales de venta de la organización gracias a su confiabilidad y desempeño en ambientes de operación continua.

La inversión permitió modernizar de forma integral la tecnología de la cadena, desde el corporativo hasta cada sucursal, con equipamiento estandarizado que agiliza la operación diaria. This Midwest K-12 school district needed to replace 35 aging SMART boards across its classrooms. These legacy solutions required frequent recalibration, and the growing stream of IT support tickets they generated had become its own ongoing burden on the district's technology team. When the district issued a formal RFP for 35 new interactive display panels, the specification originally called for a 4K “no-OS” panel that requires pairing with an external compute device, such as a Chromebox or a teacher's own laptop, just to run its operating system.

What Does the Deployment Look Like?

All 35 IFP7541 panels replaced the district's SMART boards on a like-for-like basis, one panel per classroom, mounted on WMK-047-2 wall mount kits. Because the panels run their own embedded Android OS, there's no external Chromebox or laptop needed to pair, connect to or troubleshoot alongside the display itself.

The embedded OS and myViewBoard platform, together with Viewsonic Manager, also mean IT can centrally manage every panel across the district from one place.

Festival PRISMA 2026 Delivers Projection Mapping with the ViewSonic LS740HD

Universidad Anáhuac Mayab, located in Mérida, Yucatán, in southeastern Mexico, is a private higher education institution with nearly 8,000 students from 27 countries. It is widely recognized for its academic excellence and forward-thinking educational approach, which is based on flexible programs and comprehensive learning environments that prepare highly qualified professionals.

Anáhuac is currently ranked among the top 2% of universities worldwide and among the top three private universities in Mexico. It is also one of the three universities with the highest graduate employability rates in the country. The university offers 30 undergraduate programs in a variety of fields. Among them is the Multimedia Design degree program, which contributes to the video game, animation, audiovisual production and digital design industries. These fields have experienced exponential growth in popularity and demand, becoming some of the most important multibillion-dollar sectors in the world.

Multimedia designers play a key role in developing and sustaining these industries by creating innovative, trend-driven digital design solutions. They are experts in managing and marketing digital projects, using specialized software for image, audio, and video editing, as well as 2D and 3D modeling and animation, digital publishing and application development.

CHALLENGE

In 2022, Universidad Anáhuac Mayab, in collaboration with students from its Multimedia Design program, created Festival PRISMA, a space where creativity and technology come together to transform the way people interact with the world. The festival demonstrates how multimedia design breaks down barriers, merges artistic creation and connects without limits through audiovisual experiences, animations and interactive environments.

For its fourth edition in 2026, PRISMA offered a variety of activities focused on multimedia design and technological innovation. These included animation screenings, audiovisual productions, multimedia design showcases, and conferences featuring international experts in film and animation. A projection mapping show was also presented using projectors that showcased the students’ creativity, innovation and talent.

Projection mapping had been featured in previous editions of PRISMA; however, securing the appropriate equipment to carry out the project under ideal conditions had become increasingly difficult.

Solución

This year, students in the eighth semester of the Multimedia Design program were responsible for creating the projection mapping animation, which was displayed on square structures using 360° imagery.

ViewSonic equipped the festival with four LS740HD projectors, which deliver 5,000 ANSI lumens and feature lamp-free, third-generation laser phosphor technology to ensure bright and vivid images. They can also project Full HD 1080p images at sizes of up to 300 inches. The LS740HD features 1.3X optical zoom, horizontal and vertical keystone correction, four-corner adjustment, 360° projection and portrait mode, making it the ideal solution for the show developed by the students.

Professor Zeus Borges, Coordinator of the Multimedia Design Program and organizer of the festival, explained: “Through this event, we aim to become a connection hub for the southeastern region. At present, Mexico does not have an initiative that supports animation or audiovisual production for states such as Chiapas, Tabasco, Veracruz, Campeche, Quintana Roo, and, especially, Yucatán. We want to become a meeting point for southeastern Mexico and Central America.”

“We have a large student population from El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and even Colombia who come to study here in Mérida. Festival PRISMA gives them the opportunity to meet entrepreneurs and leaders from the audiovisual industry, allowing them to interact with these professionals and expand their knowledge. We want Mérida to become that meeting point, a place that creates employment opportunities and serves as a production hub. This year, we welcomed guests guests from Spain and from California, USA,” he added.

Thanks to the LS740HD’s ability to be positioned vertically at virtually any angle, the students were able to develop creative applications with additional support from specialized software.

“There is excellent compatibility between the projectors and the computers. We did not experience any connection or interaction issues. Implementing the ViewSonic projectors was extremely straightforward,” Professor Borges added. “We are currently evaluating new projects involving the façades and buildings around the university. We want to make the most of everything we can achieve in terms of visualization. Now that the projectors are part of our technology toolkit, we have thousands of ideas that we can begin bringing to life.”

They already have practical knowledge that gives them useful experience and a professional edge that is invaluable to their development,” the professor explained.

RESULTS

According to Professor Borges, having the equipment available on campus will allow the university to experiment with new projection mapping trends, such as linking multiple projectors and exploring new ideas that enable professors and students to further expand their creativity.

Equipment with capabilities such as those offered by the LS740HD projectors enhances the students’ development and opens the door to more innovative creations that may one day be enjoyed in films, video games, or digital animations displayed on mobile phones or other visual devices.
