High-Tech Radiosurgery Meets a Feel-Good Atmosphere – The Visual Transformation at the ZAP-X^® Center Essen

As part of the introduction of the novel ZAP-X^® radiosurgery, the Alfried Krupp Hospital in Essen faced the task of combining top-tier medical technology with an immersive, patient-centered spatial concept. Together with ViewSonic and the system integrator, a custom All-in-One Direct View LED (dvLED) display was implemented. Through the use of a 136” LED wall in the reception area and a monumental 325” 8K LED wall in the treatment room, a calm, anxiety-reducing environment was created that supports patients during relaxation therapy and impresses with first-class image quality.

The Challenge: High-Tech Radiosurgery Meets Emotional Space Design

With the introduction of the novel ZAP-X^® radiosurgery, the Alfried Krupp Hospital Essen now offers a highly precise, non-invasive treatment for brain tumors. In setting up the ZAP-X center, the hospital faced the task of combining top-tier medical technology with a patient-centered design of space and information:

• Relaxation therapy in the treatment room: The sterile atmosphere of classic medical-technology rooms often causes tension in patients. The aim was to create an immersive ambience that reduces anxiety and supports relaxation processes.
• Information & orientation: The reception area needed a modern large-format display for targeted patient guidance.
• Autonomy & content playback: A sophisticated 8K visualization was required that could be operated independently by the in-house media technology team (MACOM).

The Solution: Custom LED Wall Installations

In close coordination with the system integrator Pestinger GmbH (Rhein-Main Medientechnik), ViewSonic integrated two custom Direct View LED large-area solutions from the LDC series for two central areas of the hospital:

• 136” LED wall in the reception area: As a representative reception and information display.
• 325” 8K LED wall in the ZAP-X room: As a gigantic panoramic surface for immersive content.
• Reliable technology: External controllers and power boxes keep the treatment rooms free of noise and heat and simplify maintenance.
• Optimal patient guidance: The 136” display in the reception area provides clear orientation and underscores the hospital's high-tech standard.
