Setting up an Appropriate Viewing Angle for Healthy Office Ergonomics

Research shows that when your body is at rest your eyes naturally assume a downward line of sight. The amount of downward gaze ranges from about 15-30 degrees. The full range of eye movement is 60 degrees; people engaged in visually demanding tasks limit their downward eye movements to about 30. Based on the experimental findings above, it is safe to assume that placing your monitor at around 15 degrees below your horizontal line of sight will result in comfortable positioning for your body and help to establish healthy office ergonomics. The reasoning behind this is that this positioning will act as the center point between the 30 degrees of eye movement used at work by covering 15 degrees above and below your natural line of sight.

Studies have also concluded that people doing intensive visual work indicated that looking upwards above the horizontal line of sight is tiring. Looking below the horizontal line of sight, however, is not. Based on this information you can consider moving your monitor downward by up to another 15 degrees when finding the positioning most comfortable for your specific office ergonomics setup.

Selecting the Appropriate Viewing Distance

It’s common for people to tell children not to sit too close to the television – and they’re right! The reason for this is that eyestrain is caused by the muscular effort required to focus on objects at close distances. Looking at objects that are further away has little to no impact on eye strain. Deciding on a suitable distance for your monitor is up to personal preference and is subject to change over time.

The Science behind Viewing Distances

Accommodation and convergence are the two main functions at work when viewing objects at close distances. The shorter the viewing distance, the greater the muscular effort exerted for accommodation and convergence. An increase in accommodation and convergence effort results in increased strain on the eyes. A further viewing distance will diminish this muscular exertion but may make finer images and characters displayed on your computer screen more difficult to read. You’ll know when you’ve found the correct viewing distance for effective office ergonomics when you can easily read the screen without placing any strain on your eyes.

“Measurements of an RPA around 75cm or 30” and an RPV around 80cm or 32” are close enough in value to make setting up the proper viewing distance for office ergonomics a simple process. A viewing range of 40cm – 70cm or 15” – 27” is a visually comfortable range for a majority of computer users. In situations where the recommended viewing distance is too great for the operator to see images clearly it is better to increase font size than to force a shorter viewing distance.”

According to Mary Cheval, Principal at Ware Malcomb, an international design firm that specializes in workplace strategy, there are four themes present in the future of offices.

Artificial Intelligence: According to Ware Malcomb, offices in the future will utilize AI to manage hybrid work, collect data and preferences and track KPIs. Stepping into the office of 2035 might mean interacting with a digital concierge that knows your digital and personal preferences.

Wellness: If offices are going to be a destination that pulls and attracts employees, wellness needs to be at the top of mind. In the future, this might look like secure touchless entrances or wearables that remind employees to get up and take a break.

Fit for Purpose: Mobility isn’t just a short-term shift. It is a concept that will extend well into the future. In order to remain competitive, offices of the future will need to be distraction-free and have immersive technology that facilitates authentic interaction.

Automation: While offices in the present day have automation in the form of disparate apps, offices of the future will have a seamless automated environment. This includes things like energy management, communication with RFID chips and the ability to predict and improve occupant comfort.

The concept of a growth mindset – the belief that intelligence can be developed through effort – is gaining considerable attention in the education world. And for good reason.

A student’s perspective or “mindset” can have a huge impact on their academic success, motivation and future. And teachers, as primary mentors, can play a big role in nurturing that mindset.

What is a Fixed Mindset vs. a Growth Mindset?

The theory of fixed and growth mindset comes from Dr. Carol Dweck, a professor of psychology at Stanford University.

It’s not hard to see why having a growth mindset is essential to a student’s lifelong success.  That’s where encouragement from teachers comes in.

How Teachers Can Help

As a teacher, you want to see all of your students succeed. So how can you encourage and teach students to have a growth mindset? Is it possible to influence the outcome at all?

According to a national study of over 600 K-12 teachers conducted by Education Week Research Center, 96% of teachers believe that integrating a growth mindset will lead to improved student learning. But only 20% of study participants said they strongly believed they were good at fostering a growth mindset. 85% reported that they wanted more professional development in this area.

Practical Tips to Encourage a Growth Mindset

By making some simple changes in the classroom, you can begin to foster an environment where students are not only aware of a growth mindset, but can actively take care in creating it. Here are some simple strategies:

    1. Teach students to embrace their imperfections.

No one has ever learned something valuable without making mistakes. Changing your students’ perspective on mistakes is one of the greatest gifts you can give them. Encourage students to view their mistakes as one of many steps toward mastery. Take time to help students reflect on both successes and failures. Remind them that everyone succeeds and fails, and that each step got us to where we are today.

    1. Help students see challenges as opportunities for growth.

Once you help students embrace their imperfections, you can help them view their mistakes as helpful. The red pen isn’t the enemy—not trying is. One practical way to encourage that attitude is to take the most common mistakes that the class made on a test or quiz and analyze those mistakes together. The more open everyone is about the mistakes they’ve made, the less significance any student will place on future errors.

    1. Adopt a “growth mindset” language.

Another valuable strategy is to replace negative words with positive phrases. For example, use the term “learning” instead of “failing.” And use the phrase “not yet.” Whenever you see students struggling with a task, just tell them they haven’t mastered it yet. Pay attention to words that may reinforce one mindset or the other. Some phrases that support a fixed mindset include: “You’re so smart”; “Wrong answer”; and “You’re a natural at this.” On the other hand, some words and phrases that support a growth mindset include: “Mistakes help you learn”; “Great use of several strategies to solve that problem”; and “You haven’t been able to solve this problem yet, but you will.”

    1.  Acknowledge student’s effort.

When fostering a growth mindset in students, remember to acknowledge the process and effort a student is making, rather than the outcome alone. Praise them for practicing, asking for help or trying new strategies, rather than on their talent or intellect. Compliment them on how hard they have worked or how much they are progressing. Remind them that hard work always comes before obtaining skill—and that learning is a process.
