Asia Pacific is one of the world's most diverse regions. Every market has its own culture, customer expectations, and way of doing business. That makes it an exciting place to grow a business, but also one that demands local insight and the ability to adapt.
In this edition of Behind the Screens, we meet Eric Wei, Asia Pacific General Manager at ViewSonic. Since joining the company in 2013, Eric has led business development and country operations across the region.
From navigating diverse markets to leading across cultures, Eric shares what he's learned about building a high-performing team in one of ViewSonic's most dynamic regions.
Executive Profile: Eric Wei is the General Manager for ViewSonic Asia Pacific (APAC), leading regional business development and country operations since 2013.
Core Philosophy: Rejects a one-size-fits-all model by combining local market expertise with shared regional strategy to adapt across diverse APAC economies.
Leadership Style: Built on trust, transparency, and decision-making ownership, encouraging local teams to view successes and failures as learning opportunities.
Competitive Edge: Treats APAC’s cultural and market diversity as a key strength of the regional business, enabling better-informed decisions across markets.
Financial Performance: Achieved ViewSonic APAC's highest net margin to date by focusing on high-value customer segments in challenging, price-sensitive markets.
I was actually introduced to ViewSonic through a headhunter. What started as a career opportunity quickly became much more than that. The diversity of the Asia Pacific region has kept me inspired ever since. Every market has its own culture, level of maturity, and way of doing business, so there's always something new to learn and a different challenge to tackle.
I put a lot of trust in my team. Everyone has the authority to make decisions and take ownership of their work. My role is to provide support, be transparent, and keep communication open, whether we're celebrating successes or working through challenges. That openness shapes our team culture. We celebrate successes, but we're just as open about failures. Making mistakes isn't the problem. Failing to learn from them is. When people know they'll be supported through both wins and setbacks, they're more willing to take initiative and try new ideas.
APAC is a region full of opportunities. Many markets have young populations and growing economies, and there's still plenty of room for technology adoption. That gives us a lot of potential for growth.
At the same time, every market comes with its own challenges. Income levels vary, and political or economic uncertainty can make doing business more difficult. That's why we don't take a one-size-fits-all approach. We rely on our local teams to understand their customers, identify the right opportunities, and choose the best channels for each market.
Working closely with people from such different backgrounds naturally keeps you open-minded. I always try to put myself in my team members' shoes and understand things from their local perspective before making a decision.
That's what makes our diversity such a strength. Instead of applying the same approach everywhere, we combine local knowledge with a shared regional direction. Every team brings its own understanding of customer needs, culture, and market conditions. When we bring those perspectives together, we make better, more informed decisions than any one market could on its own.
What stands out most to me is how the team navigated some of our most challenging markets. These are countries with lower income levels, political uncertainty, and strong competition from Chinese brands. Instead of chasing volume alone, the team focused on identifying the customer segments that truly value our products and service and pursued these opportunities.
That strategy paid off. We achieved our highest net margin since establishing a presence in these markets. Seeing the team turn difficult market conditions into our strongest result yet made me incredibly proud.
Adaptability, curiosity, and resilience come to mind first. The region changes quickly, so the people who thrive here are comfortable with ambiguity and genuinely curious about the markets and cultures they work in. They don't try to apply the same playbook everywhere. Instead, they stay open-minded and adapt to what each market needs.
They also take ownership of their work. They speak up, aren't afraid to challenge ideas, and see setbacks as opportunities to learn. That mindset helps us keep growing, both as individuals and as a team.
I'd tell them this is a team that rewards people who aren't afraid to make decisions, even when they don't have all the answers. Things move quickly across APAC, so you'll often need to adapt, embrace new ideas, and learn as you go.
If you're curious, open-minded, and willing to step outside your comfort zone, you'll find plenty of opportunities to grow. Every market is different, and that's what makes working in this region so rewarding.
