Behind the Screens: How Oscar Lin is Shaping the Future of ViewSonic Monitors

At the heart of ViewSonic’s innovation are the people who drive it—and Behind the Screens is where we meet them. For this first edition, we’re going back to our roots and shining a light on what we’re best known for: monitors. We’ve invited Oscar Lin, General Manager of ViewSonic’s Monitor Business Unit, to reflect on his journey, share what motivates him, and offer a glimpse into the mindset and team dynamics that are at the core of this success story.

Oscar Lin doesn’t see the monitor industry, often deemed mature, as slow or static. Instead, he sees a space full of possibility. Since joining in 2016, he’s led the monitor business through a sharp evolution: streamlining teams, expanding the portfolio, and positioning ViewSonic as a global leader across consumer and commercial segments. His story is proof that even in a mature category, growth is possible: with the right people, products, and purpose.

1. How did your journey to ViewSonic begin?

I’ve been familiar with the ViewSonic brand since I was a kid. Like many growing up in the ’90s, I remember seeing those three-bird monitors everywhere. That impression stuck with me.

I started out at Acer and spent over a decade there, working across LCD TVs, monitors, and eventually leading the notebook business in China, helping the brand reach the No. 2 spot in the market. ViewSonic first reached out to me during that time, but I wasn’t ready to make a move.

When they approached me again in 2016, the situation was different. The leadership team still had a well-articulated vision, a real passion for displays, and a structured plan to navigate an evolving market. But this time, it also coincided with my decision to move back to Taiwan. It all came together—and that’s what gave me the confidence to join.

2. With nearly four decades of monitor heritage, how are you keeping the category fresh and aligned with the way people work and connect today?

Our focus has always been on how we can make displays more meaningful and useful to people. A monitor isn’t just a piece of hardware anymore—it’s part of a larger experience.

Early on, we believed that USB-C and docking monitors would become essential, even if the market wasn’t quite there yet. We took a risk by pushing that direction ahead of time, but it was based on a clear understanding of how people’s needs were changing. I still think docking monitors represent a big opportunity, especially as more users want simplified setups without sacrificing performance.

Today, that same thinking drives us to go beyond hardware. We’re working on platforms and features that improve productivity and usability. One example is the ViewSonic Display Portal—a centralized hub that lets users adjust settings, update firmware, and install tools easily. It’s about giving people more control and creating a smarter, more seamless experience around the display.

3. What’s your approach to managing the global monitor business at ViewSonic?

I lead from the front.

I don’t believe in being just a ‘boss’—I believe in being present. Whether it’s working with suppliers during a crisis or helping the team break down ambitious targets into clear, actionable plans, I stay close to the work and the people.

I’m very focused on results, but never at the expense of clarity or support. Our goals must remain clear, but how we get there doesn’t need to be rigid. I always encourage the team to find better, more efficient ways to reach those targets. My role is to make sure the team knows where we’re going and feels equipped to get there. That means setting direction, staying agile, and being ready to step in when it counts.

4. How would you describe your team’s culture and what sets it apart?

As a team, we prioritize three things: being efficient, staying adaptable, and moving with agility.

People often assume the monitor market is mature and slow to evolve—but it actually moves fast, and so do we. Whether it’s shifting priorities, adopting new technologies, or responding to changing customer expectations, adaptability is key. What I mentioned earlier about USB-C is a good example. The team showed real agility—moving fast, turning the opportunity into a product, and delivering it with focus, even before the market was fully there.

I always joke that by 6:01 PM, the office can be empty—because the work is done. We don’t believe in staying late just to look busy. The focus is on doing things right the first time, staying sharp, and delivering results efficiently. Efficiency, agility, and adaptability are what make that possible.

Transparency is key to making that work. If someone’s overloaded, I want them to speak up so we can solve it together. That kind of openness builds trust—and trust keeps the team strong.

5. What kind of people grow and succeed in your business unit?

The people who thrive here are curious, adaptable, and take ownership.

I look for team members who don’t shy away from challenges—who notice when something isn’t working and immediately start thinking about how to make it better. You don’t have to have all the answers on day one, but you need the drive to figure things out and the initiative to act.

This is a fast-moving environment. Things change quickly, and waiting around for someone else to fix the problem doesn’t work. The people who succeed here step in, speak up, and help move the whole team forward.

6. Can you share a team achievement that stands out to you?

One of my proudest achievements—and for the team as well—is how we became global leaders in the portable monitor category.

I still remember when we launched our first portable model back in 2020. A lot of people didn’t see the value in it, suppliers weren’t interested, and the market didn’t seem ready. But we believed the category had a future.

We worked closely with the teams in the U.S. to get the product on shelves, tackled supplier quality issues, and stayed focused on delivering a clear vision.

That persistence paid off. By Q3 2024, we led the global portable monitor category with a 26.4% market share, including 21.6% for touch models.

That success didn’t come from one person, it came from alignment across the team. Engineers, sales, marketing, business line managers, product managers… everyone believed in the direction we were going. And some of those early models, like the VG1655 and TD1655, are still top sellers today.

7. What would you say to people who might be interested in joining ViewSonic’s Monitor BU?

This is an industry where you can grow fast—if you’re ready.

We might not be the flashiest corner of tech, but there’s real substance here. I think the monitor space is full of opportunity, especially for people who are early in their careers and want to build something that lasts.

We value people who want to take ownership, grow steadily, and contribute to something meaningful. This isn’t a place built on hype or churn—it’s a place where effort gets noticed, and growth gets rewarded. If that sounds like you, you’ll do well here.

8. What are you most looking forward to?

The people and the work—still.

That’s what motivated me from day one, and it’s what continues to inspire me. I’ve always believed that our success comes down to having the right people in the right roles. Early on, I spent time getting to know the team—understanding their strengths and where they could do their best work. That approach hasn’t changed.

What I’m looking forward to now is building on that foundation. We’ve proven that even in a mature category, you can still lead, still grow, and still change the game. That’s what we’re doing here—and I’m excited to keep pushing what’s possible, together.
