At the heart of ViewSonic’s innovation are the people who drive it — and Behind the Screens is where we meet them. In this edition, we shift our focus from hardware and software to the digital infrastructure powering it.
We spoke with Andy Wang, Software and Shared Services Director, to explore how he and his team are building a unified, scalable, and secure software ecosystem that supports ViewSonic’s global business units. From delivering software solutions to advancing AI integration and strengthening cloud security, Andy’s team powers the systems behind every screen, login, and connected experience.
After leaving foodpanda, I reflected on what kind of challenge I wanted next. At foodpanda, I led teams across Singapore and Taiwan and rolled out Panda Pro subscriptions in over 20 countries. That experience taught me the importance of agility and speed, but also how to maintain quality at scale through test automation.
Before that, I spent over 11 years at Yahoo, working with four global teams. One highlight was launching a machine learning powered “Trending Now” feature on the Yahoo homepage, which served tens of millions of users daily. On the Native Ads team, the products we built drove more than USD 4 million in revenue per day. Those years showed me how user experience and business impact can go hand in hand. I was honored as one of Yahoo’s “Top 20 Remarkable Employees.”
So when ViewSonic came into the picture, I wasn’t sure at first. It was known as a hardware company, and the role meant leading a much larger team. But in a conversation with Bonny, our COO, I realized ViewSonic was looking for someone to build B2B educational and enterprise solutions, while also streamlining processes and managing cybersecurity, compliance, and site reliability engineering (SRE). Bonny saw that potential in my background, and that trust has shaped everything since.
The team has grown from 50 to over 90, and what drives me every day is the same passion that fueled my work at Yahoo and foodpanda: building services and systems people truly value — and now creating meaningful experiences for professionals, educators, and partners around the world.
At Software and Shared Services, we build the core software that connects everything at ViewSonic, from cloud and AI to platforms like AirSync, Manager, and the ViewSonic Account. In many ways, it’s like the central nervous system of the company.
Our work touches nearly every user’s experience: streamlining user experiences, enabling AI and system integration across products, and making sure everything we do meets global security and compliance standards like CSA STAR and SOC 2.
What I’m most proud of is how we’ve brought products, engineering, and security together. It’s not just about writing code or ticking compliance boxes, it’s about solving real problems for the people who rely on us every day: educators who need seamless classrooms, business users who need reliable services or tools, creators who need flexibility, and system admins who need peace of mind.
For me, it feels a little like my time at Yahoo and foodpanda: we’re not just building technology, we’re enabling experiences at scale. And that’s the real difference our team makes.
My leadership philosophy is about leading by example, providing clear direction, and executing with discipline. I believe teams work best when they know not just what we’re doing, but why we’re doing it. That’s the north star I try to set.
To stay aligned, I introduced OKRs across our teams before 2025. This gave everyone a common language for progress, not just a checklist. I also organized several all-day agility workshops to help shift the team’s mindset. Those came directly from my formal agile training at Yahoo, where I saw firsthand how a strong agile culture could transform global teams.
We’re not yet where I want us to be. Transformation always takes time, but I’m proud of the progress. What I’ve seen is that when you combine clear goals with the courage to experiment, people start to lead themselves. And that’s the kind of culture I want to build.
What makes our team unique is how early we collaborate. Before a single line of code is written, we get everyone in the room, brainstorming, exploring different approaches, and involving senior engineers right from the start. That way, we don’t just move fast; we move intelligently, and we move together.
We believe great software takes time, and it starts with getting the foundation right. With solid fundamentals, we can scale with confidence instead of cutting corners. That’s why our process always begins with Request for Comments (RFCs), testing ideas with prototypes or Proof of Concept (POCs), and only then moving into full design specifications. Everything is documented in our internal knowledge base. It may sound rigorous, but it actually gives us speed because the whole team is aligned.
Being part of our team means you’re trusted to think deeply and contribute early. It’s a place where people grow alongside others who care just as much about quality, collaboration, and long-term impact. And that shared mindset is what makes it exciting to be here.
We’re not here to hire the so-called “best” talents. We’re here to grow with the right ones—people who stay open to feedback, aren’t afraid to fail, and are always eager to learn.
That’s why I always remind my team that “Improving just 1% each day is enough.” Progress doesn’t have to be dramatic, just consistent. What truly matters is having a learner’s mindset and the willingness to take ownership.
And when mistakes happen, because they always do, we don’t treat them as setbacks but as lessons. As long as we learn and adapt, failure becomes part of the growth process.
So the people who thrive here are curious, resilient, and collaborative. If that sounds like you, you’ll fit right in. And along the way, we’ll work hard, learn fast, and yes, have some fun, too.
There have been quite a few moments that made me proud recently. One was how our AirSync adoption grew dramatically, from just about 300 devices a day earlier this year to nearly 2,000 devices daily. That shows our work is really making an impact in classrooms.
Another was the launch of our in-house “Incidently” tool, which helps our SREs automate incident reports and follow-ups. It’s not glamorous, but it has transformed how quickly and consistently we handle critical issues.
I’m also especially proud of the Manager team. They not only boosted unit test coverage from 10% to 30%, but also successfully decoupled the backend from the legacy monorepo. These are deep engineering wins, not always visible to users, but critical for stability, compliance, and faster future development.
And on the AI side, our AI Sales Assistant (ASA) now integrates Gemini search grounding, helping sales teams quickly compare our products with competitors. That’s a great example of AI moving from concept to tangible business value.
For me, what stands out is not just the individual wins, but the way the team brings together product, engineering, AI, and security to deliver results that scale — whether it’s for teachers, IT admins, or business users.
We offer a rare combination: the scale and stability of a global brand, with the energy and innovation of a startup team. Our work is focused on solving real problems in education and enterprise environments, everything from simplifying classroom experiences to scaling cloud infrastructure for hybrid offices.
We’ve built development practices that align with how the world’s top tech companies operate, and we’re still evolving. Last year, our biggest challenge was pushing agile transformation. This year, our focus is integration, connecting tools like AirSync, Manager, and AI-powered features into a cohesive, forward-thinking system.
If you’re someone who’s excited to build, to solve real problems, and to leave your mark, you’ll fit right in here.
That’s it for this edition of Behind the Screens. Through Andy Wang’s journey, we’ve seen how his team is modernizing ViewSonic’s software foundation — from building a unified and secure ecosystem, to advancing AI integration, and creating tools that scale across global business units. What stands out is not just the technical progress, but the culture of collaboration, curiosity, and continuous growth that Andy fosters.
More stories like this are on the way. Stay tuned for the next edition of Behind the Screens to meet more of the people shaping ViewSonic’s future from the inside out.
