Why I Chose These Three Artworks

The first photo is the 4,000-year-old Methuselah Tree and our Milky Way. This image encompasses flow with a long exposure that captures billions of stars, which creates a visual spectacle for one to enjoy and the knowledge of Earth moving throughout space. Every time you come back from a night under the stars, you realize that Earth is not just home, it’s a miracle.

The second is utilizing leading lines with the road at Joshua Tree National Park by guiding one’s eye smoothly through the image. This type of flow provides direction, structure, and visual rhythm.

Finally, contrast and golden light at Kebler Pass create a wonderful visual flow from the foliage trees above by shaping depth and creating movement.  Bright areas act like visual stepping stones, moving the viewer’s gaze through the photo.

What “FLOW” Means to Me

Flow, to me, is fully immersing oneself in composing shots, responding to light, or the emotion of the scene.

I want to develop a dramatic and eye-popping visual for the viewer to enjoy, whether it's by utilizing textures, different perspectives, or embracing golden light that creates contrast and a dreamlike work of art.

Losing track of time and embracing art through photography is always a goal in mind. Enjoy yourself and the moment by simply reacting, composing, and capturing. I want people to lose themselves in my imagery and create a story that connects with them for a lifetime.

Tips & Tricks

When creating a sense of flow in your image, one tip to keep in mind is using luminosity masks to control light and guide the viewer’s eye.

This type of technique can be utilized within Lightroom's masking options: radial/linear gradients, brushes, colour range, and luminance range.

Dodging and burning is created when one lightens and/or darkens a specific area of the image. This is a powerful post-processing technique that helps create flow within an image by precisely controlling light, contrast, and depth—the core elements that guide the viewer’s eye.

You can guide the viewer throughout the image by way of light and contrast. Dodging light always draws the eye first, while burning darkens edges or distractions so the eye doesn't wander.

One major key to doing this is knowing where your light source is coming from. If sunlight is passing from left to right over a hillside, dodging can be placed on the left portion of the hill.

Opposing contrast can be created by burning or darkening the right side of the hills, which enhances depth and makes the scene more dynamic.

A photo with good flow feels cohesive and creates balance and harmony. Luminosity masking is a valuable editing technique that encapsulates that impression every single time.
