While virtualized desktops (VDI) enhance security by removing data from local devices, the complexity, staffing requirements and implementation costs are prohibitively high for many smaller retailers. Cloud-hosted desktops, or Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS), on the other hand, offers a less costly and easier-to-manage means of achieving the benefits of VDI – making the security of non-persistent desktops achievable for nearly any sized business. With DaaS, retailers purchase VDI back-end services from a third-party provider on a subscription basis, including data storage, backup, security, and upgrades. Virtual desktops are delivered to any device via the Internet, providing the security benefits of VDI, along with deployment at a fraction of the IT resources, time and cost required for traditional VDI.
The value, efficiency, and reliability of DaaS can be further enhanced by the use of endpoint clients purpose-built to support desktop virtualization, such as ViewSonic’s discrete thin and zero clients, integrated thin and zero client displays, and smart display clients, which have been optimized for faster performance, lower power consumption, and longer product lifespan.
