ViewSonic VOT125-4 PC Mini
Sometimes a full-sized desktop PC is just too big and bulky. Yet, a notebook— while handily portable—seems a bit limited. If only there were something . . . in between. A computer like the ViewSonic VOT125-4, in fact.
Power To Spare
The VOT125-4 Mini is pint-sized. At 1.5 x 5.11 x 4.5 inches (HxWxD), it’s small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. (OK, so you’d need a fairly large hand.) The VOT125-4 is powered by an ultra-low voltage Intel Core 2 Duo 1.30GHz processor, which runs cool enough that there’s no need for big, noisy fans. (Other, less powerful VOT125 models are also available at correspondingly lower prices.) It includes 2GB of DDR memory and comes with a more-than-adequate 5,400rpm 250GB SATA hard drive. (No optical drives are included, although one can be connected via one of the USB 2.0 ports.) All VOT-125 models come with Windows 7 Home Premium installed, and little else—and we mean that in a good way. Instead of piling on the bloatware, ViewSonic wisely opted for the efficient, minimalist approach. You get Windows 7, a 60-day trial for Microsoft Office Online, and an antivirus app—and that’s it.
Connectivity & Video
When you look at the VOT125’s connectivity options, you’ll think you’re viewing the specs of a full-sized desktop computer: The machine provides Ethernet, Wi-Fi, four USB ports, a 3-in-1 card reader, and in/out audio jacks. It comes with HDMI and DVI outputs, so you can connect just about any sort of video display—including a VGA monitor, if you use a DVI-to- VGA adapter.
Convenient & Compact
The machine comes with a mounting kit that enables you to mount it almost anywhere— including the back of a VESA (Video Electronics Standards Associa t i o n ) - c omp a t i b l e monitor. Once you attach the VOT125 to your monitor, it takes up no room on your desk or worktable. (In effect, it’s like having one of those all-in-one systems with the PC built into the monitor itself, except that this setup is even more flexible than that.)
Performance
We put the VOT125-4 through its paces and never encountered a hiccup, even when streaming video, running typical office tasks, and Web surfing at the same time. The VOT125-4, with its Core 2 Duo processor, has enough horsepower to outperform the netbook systems to which it’s likely to be compared; we never found it wanting, even when we purposely attempted to stress it. Review: ViewSonic VOT125 (4.5 out of 5)
"We tested the VOT125 under a variety of entertainment and productivity usage environments and each time the ViewSonic performed like a champ -- certainly compared to the Atom-based nettops it would normally fight. We ran several office application multitasking scenarios, and every app ran without a hitch. For multimedia testing, we played a variety of HD videos at high resolution while running other applications and again found no hiccups or slowdowns in the system.”
Kelcey Lehrich - Electronista
"…the list of connectivity options for the VOT125 reads like that of a standard full sized desktop…"
"We're glad the bloatware isn't here, as the extra software seems to only weigh down other computers."
"We could see office users buying the VOT125 to mount to the back of LCD flat panels to free up desk space. Where it truly shines, though, is in its performance."
"…impressive computing performance in one of the smallest footprints possible…"

ViewSonic VOT125-4 PC Mini
OK, so you can’t game all the time. Nor will you always be rendering video, writing and debugging code, or doing a thousand other tough jobs that require a monster system. Sometimes small is good, especially when it’ll still get the job done.
ROD SCHER - www.computerpoweruser.com
The VOT125-4 is small, but it’s no slouch. No way it can go head-to-head with your main system, but as a second setup? Not bad at all.
The VOT125-4 is tiny: At 5.11 x 1.5 x 4.5 inches (HxWxD), it’s almost literally palm-sized. But packed in that little case is a fair amount of power and a set of specs that is comparable to some fullsized desktop machines: The ultra-low voltage Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor runs at 1.3GHz, and the machine comes with 2GB of DDR2-800 SO-DIMM. Add a 3-in-1 card reader, four USB ports, and the typical line-in/mic-in and Wi-Fi/ Ethernet setup, and you’ve got a powerful little system that can justify the space it takes up on your desk or worktable.
And speaking of which . . . the VOT125-series machines include VESA mounts, so you can mount the case almost anywhere; you can even tuck it behind a VESA-compatible monitor—which means that, if you like, it can take up no room on your desk at all, instead hanging from the back of your monitor like some sort of Windows-based alien pod-like life form.
Powerful for its size, the VOT125-4 is a quiet, energy-efficient computing option that’s worth considering as a second system. It may not have what you need when you’re rendering CGI or involved in heavy-duty MMORPG, but it’ll fill the bill for most everyday uses. A zero-footprint PC that runs Windows 7 and has more horsepower than that netbook you’ve been thinking about? Definitely worth checking out.
