ViewSonic gets even more specialized with the VSD220 Smart Display, a 21.5-inch-high 1,920 x 1,080 LCD display with a built-in dual-core OMAP-based computer running Android 4.0. Currently listing for $399, the VSD220 includes a two-point touch screen, webcam and mic, USB ports, HDMI input, wired and wireless Ethernet, Bluetooth, built-in stereo speaker, stand, VESA mount and soft keyboard. • Tech Lab: 4 Chromebooks

By contrast, ViewSonic's VSD220 takes Google software a step further with an all-in-one system. Rather than Chrome, though, the VSD220 uses the latest Android 4.0 software (a.k.a., Ice Cream Sandwich) and provides access to the deep library of educational Android apps available online. It can be thought of as the world's largest tablet, although at 11 pounds, it'll probably remain on the desk. Behind its 22-inch HD monitor, the VSD220 has a dual-core ARM processor, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of storage. Its HD display is touch-sensitive, but unlike most slates and the Pixel, it can handle only two finger inputs at a time and works best with simple gestures. At $425, it's an inexpensive way to add Web-centric screens to schools.

  • The PC monitor is dead. Meet the new smart monitor

ViewSonic also operates its own app store, although popular apps like Spotify either didn’t run or were offset 90 degrees in portrait mode. Some apps displayed awkwardly, and others were simply incompatible. Connected TVs, with a limited number of video-streaming apps optimized for large displays, haven’t suffered the same problems. “Neither Android customers nor developers are necessarily used to a 22-inch Android experience,” Mau notes. That said, ViewSonic plans to expand its Android smart monitor line this fall with two models: the VSD221, a comparably priced follow-up to the VSD220 that upgrades the hardware to Android 4.3, and the VSD241, a larger 24-inch version with an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor inside it, Mau said. ViewSonic also plans a version of the VSD221 for the enterprise, with manageability options that include locking out the Google Play app store. Both models will launch in October.

  • Terrific tech gifts for the graduates in your life

The 22” VSD220 Smart Display has seen a lot of use in my home lately. I thought it would simply be a second screen for my home office, but its capabilities are far beyond simple viewing. ViewSonic has paired a 1920×1080 full-HD resolution monitor with the dual-core, ARM-based OMAP 4 processor from Texas Instruments and an Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” operating system. Think of it as a desktop-sized Android device that’s also a touchscreen PC monitor.

  • ViewSonic VSD220 22-Inch Smart Display

I can think of two places the VSD220 would be ideal, and I’m sure there are plenty more but these are the ones that pop to mind for me. The first is as a kitchen TV. I use my phone or tablet to look up recipes all the time (well, OK, as often as I cook which admittedly... never mind). This is great, but the small screen ends up being almost as annoying as it is helpful, not least because it times out and I need to swipe it awake with whatever digit is somewhat clean. It’s often easier for me to just print it out (oh the horror, analog).

  • Touch and Go with the ViewSonic 23" Smart Monitor (VSD220)

In a world where a 10” tablet is “large”, one the size of the VSD220 is enormous. Average hardware isn’t enough to seriously cripple the device and doubling as an HD PC monitor makes it exponentially more useful. Quick, easy setup gives way to multiple options and viewing mobile apps at an non-traditional size would expect to see certain texture issues, but if it is HD-compatible it comes through crystal clear. It connects to your network via Wi-Fi and has a touch-response time of around 5ms, meaning it’s surprisingly fast when you want to use the screen rather than the mouse. Finally, with a three year warranty, you’ll be protected should the monitor encounter any problems. All-in-all, the smart monitor is a beautiful piece of hardware and, as components become cheaper and smaller, expect ViewSonic to continue that trend going forward.

  • 2013 the Year the Desktop PC Dies

But it's not just the PC manufacturers that are preparing for a PC-less and cloud only future. Viewsonic has been a traditional manufacturer of displays for 25 years, however that's about to change. Rather than concentrating on creating displays that plug into a computer, they are instead creating intelligent "smart displays." These connect to the cloud, and work with any device from smartphones to the soon-to-be-made-redundant PC.

ViewSonic was recently nominated as an International CES Innovations 2013 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree for its VSD220 – “an interactive, touch-enabled Smart Display integrated with Android 4.0 OS that enriches the way consumers experience the web,” according to a release.

  • Gift ideas for the office (or home office)

Imagine a giant Android tablet that went well beyond its 10-inch display, say more than twice that amount, at 22 inches. While that device would stop being mobile, if you put a stand on the back of it, the device would be able to sit on a desktop or tabletop and look a lot like a computer monitor. That's basically what ViewSonic has done with its Smart Display, a 22-inch monitor that also contains the Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system. Running off a TI Dual-core ARM Processor, the Smart Display has a touch screen for navigating the interface, although you can also plug in a USB keyboard and/or mouse via two ports on the side.

  • Tapping Into Digital Signage: Vertical Opportunities Arise For VARs

According to Erik Willey, LCD monitor and PC product marketing director at ViewSonic, smaller-scale and touch-enabled displays, such as ViewSonic's new VSD220 Smart Display, will arm solution providers with a new inlet into vertical markets such as hospitality, where there is a growing need for more personalized digital signage offerings that can be used to interact with customers on a one-on-one basis.

  • Aiming to "revolutionize the display experience," ViewSonic unveils Android-based Smart Display

Hoping to "revolutionize the display experience," ViewSonic is launching a high-definition touch-screen monitor with an Android-based computer inside it. It's like an all-in-one desktop computer, but it's not running Microsoft's Windows operating system. Still, the display is aimed at consumers who want to do computing-like tasks such as surfing the web, engaging on social networks, and enjoying a bunch of Android apps. The new VSD220 Smart Display has an dual-core ARM-based Texas Instruments OMAP 4 processor inside running Google's Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) version operation system.

ViewSonic broke through a bit of the iPhone 5 news on Wednesday when it introduced a compelling new product: the VSD220 Smart Display. As its name implies, the Smart Display features a 22-inch screen, with a 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution, and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. So what's it for? Basically running Android applications and browsing the web. It doesn't need to be a consumer-specific product, however. ViewSonic imagines it being used by vertical markets for hospital signs, kiosks and points of information.

  • ViewSonic VSD220 Smart Display with Android 4.0 comes to US in October, dips to $399

You might remember ViewSonic's slightly strange VCD22 Smart Display from our journey to Computex. If the sight of that 22-inch, Android-based all-in-one desktop set your heart aflutter, you'll be glad to know the finished version is coming to the US as the VSD220 by mid-to-late October. It's decidedly less portable what we saw in Taipei this June and strips out the battery we suspect most buyers wouldn't have used. For better or worse, though, most everything else is the same: while we didn't expect a change to the TI OMAP 4 processor, the VSD220 will be clinging to Android 4.0 instead of upgrading to Android 4.1 for its trip across the Pacific.

  • ViewSonic's all-in-one VSD220 Android 4.0 display revealed

It was back in May when we first spotted ViewSonic’s 22-inch Android-powered device. We didn’t know better what to call it at first, but all the while hoping to embrace it in our hands as a tablet. But after playing with it briefly during Computex 2012, it was clear that that’s not the direction that ViewSonic was taking. Those planning to wheel this big fella out to the nearest café or whip it out for a quick work while commuting will be disappointed to learn that Viewsonic has yanked the battery out from the original specs sheet. Putting the two unlikely scenarios aside, ViewSonic has announced the arrival of the desktop set for the U.S. Market.

  • ViewSonic 21.5 inch Tablet Screen

ViewSonic likes to pump it up a little bit every time they kick in some products. This time, they have amazed everyone by bringing a 21.5 inch tablet display to the FCC for scrutiny. Named the VSD220, this one is going to be the largest in the tablet family. ViewSonic has had some success with Android, with a run of tablets and smartphones, but they never really hit it big time. This new move towards a hybrid device is aimed at taking over the home PC segment and with the power of Android; it's going to be huge.

  • It looks like Viewsonic is about to stir the pot with its new high-definition touchscreen monitor that comes with its own built-in Android-based computer.
