Quality & Environment Environmental Survey Response The following information is provided to ViewSonic customers to explain our position on extended producer responsibility, use of hazardous materials, use of recycled plastics, and occupational Health & Safety. This information is provided through the ViewSonic world-wide web. Should you have further questions regarding these points, please feel free to contact Mr. Marc M. Maupin, Director, Quality Assurance, ViewSonic Corporation via email at maupinm@viewsonic.com or via phone at 909-444-8918. A. Extended Producer Responsibility 1. Does your company extend the same opportunities for take-back and the purchasing of monitors for both business and individual customers? Yes _X_ No___ ViewSonic offers a Trade-In, Trade-Up policy to all of our individual and corporate customers, allowing the end user to recycle the old product with the purchase of a product upgrade, simply by completing a form identifying appropriate customer and product information. Upon coordination with our Customer Service representative, the appropriate upgrade will be approved. For non working, non-repairable products, ViewSonic shall recycle and/or dispose of such items in compliance with ISO 14001 requirements and our recycling partners. We shall continue to refurbish the repairable, non-working products and sell them as "Refurbished" in line with our existing procedures. ViewSonic's published customer product warranty information is found on our web page at: http://www.viewsonic.com/support/warranty.htm. Our environmental policy is "To recycle solid waste and conserve natural resources." Our goal to reduce the solid waste is enhanced by encouraging our entire customer base to recycle ViewSonic products. Detailed information on our Trade-In, Trade-Up program can be found on our web page at: http://www.viewsonic.com/support/recycleplus.htm. This program utilizes the services of Anything IT, a national recycling company, who can be contacted at ViewSonic.Trade-In@AnythingIT.com or by phone at (201) 490-8700. Per our ISO 14001 requirements, ViewSonic has established procedures for recycling our products and components, using established, audited recycling partners. 2. If you do extend these opportunities to business and/or individual customers, is this policy global? Yes_X_ No__ In which countries are these policies and products currently available? Currently, the Trade-In\Trade-Up policy applies to the USA 3. Do your company's products comply with environmental eco-labels? Yes_X_ No____ All ViewSonic's products are tested and certified Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. Our products meet or exceed EPA ENERGY STAR® requirements for energy efficiency and SWEDAC's MPR-II standards for low emissions, by shifting to a lower power consumption level, or deep-sleep mode, when lack of use is detected. ViewSonic Corporation's ISO 14001 certification ensures that we follow the rigors of TCO'92-TCO'03 for low levels of radiation, power saving, and disposal of similar plastics. All ViewSonic monitors have digital controls, non-glare screens, universal power supplies, and DPMS® power management. DPMS is a registered trademark of Video Electronic Standards Association (VESA). Further, our LCD ViewPanel® products consume up to 35% less power than the same size CRT products, which result in a lower cost of operation by conserving energy. ViewSonic products carry a variety of safety and regulatory licenses (i.e. eco-labels) in addition to TCO which include typical certifications from BCIQ, CSA, Demko, DHHS, ENERGY STAR® from US EPA, FCC, Fimko, Nemko, Semko, TUV-EMC, TUV-ERGO, TUV-GS, and UL. These stringent certifications allow our products to be sold world-wide where concern for the environment is paramount. 4. Are products designed for recycling and disassembly? Yes_X_ No___ All LCD and CRT monitors, projectors, plasma and personal computing products are comprised of plastic which can be recycled at the end of useful life. Disassembly is quick, usually consisting of 4-8 screws which hold the plastic bezel and cover assembly together. Most all electronic parts are located on a main-board assembly which can be removed separately from the LCD panel or CRT assembly. Power-signal cords are reclaimed. B. Use of Hazardous Materials 1. Does your company have any computer products or product lines, currently available or available within the next year, from which the usage of the materials listed below have been eliminated? a) lead Yes____ No_X_ b) halogen flame retardants Yes_*_ No _____ c) mercury Yes____ No_X_ d) PVC plastics Yes_X_ No _____ *ViewSonic has taken steps with our manufacturing partners to eliminate halogen and bromide-related flame retardant chemicals, particularly in our CRT products. Given the wide range of products, the specific model numbers are not provided. Our monitor products, like most electronic products, contain various chemicals considered to be hazardous in certain large quantities. CRT monitors are coated with phosphorous, while LCD monitors contain very small amounts of mercury used in the backlight inverters to illuminate the panels. From an individual product standpoint, the amount of phosphorous in a CRT monitor or the amount of mercury in a LCD monitor are not considered hazardous to the end user due to the minute quantities of these materials. ViewSonic investigated the use of Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tubes (CCFT) technology, which reduces the amount of mercury used in each product to the lowest possible level. Our goal for minimizing the amount of mercury in our products as compared to those built in 1997-1998, has been achieved. Our goal for phasing out all use of mercury in our products cannot be achieved until there is a change in the current state of technology which eliminates mercury. Since all electronic products contain electronic components which must be soldered to the circuit boards, there are studies underway to determine the best replacement of lead-based solder so as to comply with new regulations requiring use of lead-free solder. Our goal for the phase out of lead in our products is January 2006 which is the point in time when European countries mandate that electronic products contain lead-free solder. C. Use of Recycled Plastics 1. Do you use defined environmental criteria in manufacturing your products? Yes_X_ No___ Please see attachment to this response for ViewSonic's Environmental Policy Statement, which is also found on our web page. ViewSonic requires each of its manufacturing partners to have their facility certified to the requirements of ISO 14001, the standard for Environmental Management Systems. ViewSonic Corporation is pleased to have been certified to the ISO 9001 Quality Management and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems by the British Standards Institute (BSI). We are proud of our certifications and the fact that in 1998, ViewSonic was one of only 240 companies certified to the ISO 14001 Environmental standard in North America. ViewSonic received its ISO 9001 (FM 40187) certification in August 1998 and ISO 14001 (EMS 40968) certification in November 1998, both from the British Standards Institution (BSI). ViewSonic has just completed its ISO 9001:2000 conversion process and will receive our new certification in Q2-2003. Copies of the ViewSonic original certifications are attached to this response. Copies of our manufacturing facility certifications are on-file with Corporate Quality in ViewSonic's corporate headquarters. One of the criteria imposed on our manufacturing facilities is that the plastics used in our products are all to be stamped with the TCO approved plastic recycling code to aid the recycling supplier in proper disposal of the plastic to aid their end-of-life disposition. As the US and European environmental laws change, ViewSonic implements those changes into our products so as to be compliant with the industry standards. 2. If yes, does the public have access to this information? (If so, how?) Yes_X_ No___ Via our web page under Company Information, subtitled Quality and ISO: http://www.viewsonic.com/companyinfo/qualityiso.htm 3. Does your company have any computer products or product lines, currently available or available within the next year that includes the addition of recycled plastic? Yes_X_ No___ The plastics used in all our CRT and LCD products are made from recycled plastic, and are specifically coded with the appropriate industry recycling code to aid their end-of-life disposition. A list of all our products is available on our web page at http://www.viewsonic.com 4. Does your company mandate that suppliers phase-out the above list of materials and/or use recycled plastic in parts supplied to your company? Yes_X_ No__ ViewSonic has taken steps with our manufacturing partners to eliminate halogen and bromide-related flame retardant chemicals, particularly in our CRT products. Given the lack of substitutes for lead used in soldering of electronic components, and the use of mercury in the backlight inverter circuits of our LCD products, we have no estimate when these chemicals can be reduced or eliminated. Use of CCFT technology has reduced the amount of mercury currently used. Last, ViewSonic requires all manufacturing facilities to use recycled plastic in the production of our plastic front and rear product covers. ViewSonic will continue to monitor the US and European laws regarding the environment and will comply to all requirements as they are implemented or changed. D. Occupational Health and Safety ViewSonic's Environmental-Health-Safety (EHA) Specialist has access to an electronic subscription of the Federal Register and State of California laws, updated on a monthly basis. Using Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on our products, he provides relevant information to answer a customer's question regarding OSHA or ecological issues. He also records any customer complaints of an environmental nature. Further, per California law, ViewSonic posts all OSHA required information internally for our employees. Any work-related injuries or illness are analyzed by ViewSonic's medical service provider, and then reported to OSHA by the EHS Specialist, as dictated by Federal and State law. ViewSonic® Environmental Policy ViewSonic's Vision is "To be a global preferred provider to information technology users." Our Mission, to support this Vision, is "To be the #1 visual technology company. To achieve this goal, we will be the best company to do business with and the best company to work for." Because Environmental Management is good business sense, we integrate environmental considerations into all business decisions. The ViewSonic Executive Team believes in managing all of its processes for the continued improvement of our products, services and the environment, for our generation today and future generations to come. ViewSonic Management is strongly committed to the following Guiding Principles, which form our Environmental Policy:
