ViewSonic Monitors Receive New TCO '99 Certification

ViewSonic, One of a Group of Companies to First Pass Stringent Swedish Requirements, Setting Standard for Monitor Industry

WALNUT, CA – October 29, 1998 – ViewSonic® Corporation, a leading worldwide provider of advance display technologies, today announced that its 21-inch (20-inch viewable) Xtreme P817 and 17-inch (16-inch viewable) short-depth PS775 monitors are the company's first units to receive the latest TCO '99 certification. ViewSonic is among the first group of companies whose products have passed the TCO '99 Swedish standard, which is recognized as the most stringent international standard for computer safety, environmental awareness and energy consumption. TCO is promoted by the Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees.

The P817 offers an industry leading 360MHz video bandwidth, 30 to 137kHz scanning range 0.26 mm dot pitch, and an incredibly high resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 at 85Hz. The short-depth PS775 offers an ultra-fine 0.25mm dot pitch, 210MHz video bandwidth, and a 30 to 97kHz scanning range to precisely display a maximum resolution of 1,600 x 1,280.

The new TCO '99 certification aims to further improve the quality and performance of personal and portable computers, visual display units (CRTs and flat screens), keyboards, and system units. The current TCO '95 certification includes guidelines for energy consumption, screen flicker, luminance and keyboard use. TCO '99 builds upon these guidelines to include ecology, ergonomics, energy, and emissions, uniting usability and technology for users with environmental concerns.

"We are pleased to achieve this outstanding accomplishment," noted Tom Paterniti, Director of Product Marketing for ViewSonic. "Passing the TCO '99 test is a direct result of ViewSonic's hard work and our dedication to providing customers with high-quality, environmentally-safe products. We plan to introduce additional displays with the TCO '99 certification in the future."

ViewSonic has been in the forefront of environmental and safety standards for quite some time. In fact, according to Stanford Resources' Q1 1998 Monitrak® Quarterly Display Monitor Industry Report, the company shipped more TCO certified monitors in the first quarter of 1998 than any other monitor provider.

Changes embodied in the new TCO '99 requirements fall into four categories:
Ecology: requirements include the use of more environmentally friendly plastics, no painting or metallization of plastic components and cooperation with recycling companies handling electronic equipment.

Ergonomics: stricter requirements for luminance, uniformity, contrast, flicker, and front-frame reflection. This guideline also evaluates noise level limits.

Energy: requirements include a lower standby power level with a restart restriction of three seconds.

Emissions: values remain the same as TCO '95, but are measured more restrictively.

The Swedish Confederation of Professional Employees has for many years focused on influencing technical developments in the field of information technology. Today, the TCO environmental certification is used globally. More than 800 displays are TCO '92 certified, and over 600 CRT displays and 45 flat panel displays have received the TCO '95 certification.
